The Virginia Tech Hokies lose their latest home game to the Miami Hurricanes 20-14. Virginia Tech had a slow start to the game and didn’t wake up until the fourth quarter. This game marked another underwhelming performance on the offensive side of the ball and left many Hokie fans wondering what can be done to correct this stagnant offense.
Quarterback Grant Wells was 21 of 33 for only 179 yards and a passing score. While Wells did spread the ball around to six different receivers not a single one recorded more than 50 yards. For most of this season the Hokies’ offense has lacked explosive plays in the passing game, this past Saturday was just another reminder. On the ground, the Hokies only registered 78 yards with Wells accounting for 35 of those yards and a score late in the fourth.
On the opposite side of the ball, the Hokies’ defense posed no match for the Miami offense in the first half allowing 17 of Miami’s 20 points. While they only held Miami to 3 points in the second half the damage had already been done. Miami QB Tyler Van Dyke passed for 351 yards and two passing scores against the defense. While the Hurricanes also racked up 107 yards in the ground game. Another performance that coach Brent Pry can be proud of and surely would like to rectify in the next matchup.
This loss drops to Virginia Tech Hokies to 2-5 on the season and their fourth straight loss. Next week doesn’t get any easier as the Hokies travel to Raleigh, NC to play the 23rd-ranked NC State Wolfpack. Coach Pry and this team will need to reach down deep and solve their offensive woes if they hope to get their third win of the season.
