2026 ACC Football Kickoff Media Days Recap (Day 1 Focus)

The 2026 ACC Football Kickoff kicked off July 15 at the Hilton Charlotte Uptown, launching three days of press conferences, coach and player interviews, and hype for what promises to be another competitive season in the league. All 17 ACC teams will participate across the event, but Day 1 (July 15) spotlighted Florida State, Miami, NC State, Stanford, and Virginia, with their head coaches and select student-athletes facing the media. 

ACC Network provided extensive coverage, including the Commissioner’s Forum and live pressers. The event underscores the conference’s momentum heading into a season featuring tough non-conference slates and new policies for fairness.

Commissioner Jim Philips’ Forum: Strength, Unity, and Bold Stances

ACC Commissioner Jim Philips opened the event with an optimistic address celebrating the league’s achievements while addressing national challenges. Key highlights include:

• Financial and Competitive Success: The ACC is projected to generate over $900 million in revenue this year (a record), with distributions hitting new highs. Revenue has doubled since 2019 and grown 56% in five years. Viewership is up 68%. Philip touted 14 conference championships last year, seven national titles, and strong Directors’ Cup performance across all schools.

• Academics First: ACC leads in U.S. News rankings for the 19th year; 94% graduation success rate.

• Innovation and Partnerships: New multi-year deal with ReliaQuest as cybersecurity sponsor; continued ESPN partnership through 2035-36; investments in technology, replay transparency, and player availability reporting. 

• National Issues: Strong support for the Protect College Sports Act (bipartisan legislation for stability, liability protections, and agent regulation). Philips criticized potential SEC/Big Ten “self-governance,” stating, “Self-governance to me means no governance.” He called for unified action and collaboration with Congress. 

• Playoff and Eligibility: Advocates for expanded College Football Playoff access based on merit. Welcomed NCAA eligibility modernization for fairness and sustainability. 

• Other Notes: New tiebreaker policy for the ACC Championship (head-to-head first, then advanced analytics) to ensure fairness after past controversies. Moment of silence for industry figures; personal family milestone shared.

Philips emphasized the ACC’s position of strength amid industry change, positioning it as a leader in academics, athletics, and innovation.

NC State (Dave Doeren and Players)

NC State head coach Dave Doeren, entering his 14th season, highlighted strong locker room leadership and optimism around quarterback CJ Bailey. Doeren noted the team aims high with a manageable schedule and talented group, stating they have “great locker room leadership right now” and are focused on raising standards to chase an ACC title. Players like Bailey, Isaiah Shirley, and Duke Scott joined him, generating local buzz in Charlotte. 

Doeren stressed building on past progress and putting the program in position for big wins every week. 

Virginia (Tony Elliott and Players)

Virginia head coach Tony Elliott provided updates on key personnel, including a positive outlook on linebacker Kam Robinson’s return (“We anticipate once we crank up, he’ll be…”). Elliott, coming off recent successes like a Gator Bowl win, focused on player development, culture, and competing at the highest level while maintaining academic excellence. He continues to shift the narrative for the program toward sustained contention. 

Other Day 1 Teams (Florida State, Miami, Stanford)

• Florida State (Mike Norvell): Addressed hot seat rumors, expressed confidence in his position (with reported extension), praised transfer QB Ashton Daniel’s, and confirmed Tom Herman’s staff role. 

• Miami and Stanford: Joined the mix with their coaches and athletes discussing roster builds, non-conference challenges, and season goals. The league as a whole boasts one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the Power Four. 

Subsequent Days: Thursday features Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech. Friday wraps with California, Duke, North Carolina, Pitt, SMU, and Wake Forest.
