CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Forget the Brazil detour that never happened. Forget the four-game losing streak to the Wolfpack. Forget every doubt about whether last year’s 11-win breakthrough was a fluke.
On a sold-out Saturday at Scott Stadium, the Virginia Cavaliers made one thing crystal clear: this is a different program, and 2026 is going to be loud.
Beau Pribula, the dual-threat transfer who arrived via Missouri and Penn State, delivered a debut for the ages as Virginia steamrolled NC State 34-8 in the first ACC game of the college football season. The final score barely captures the dominance. The Cavaliers controlled time of possession (38:03 to 21:57), piled up 413 total yards to the Wolfpack’s 168, and never let CJ Bailey or the NC State offense breathe.
Pribula finished 9-of-11 for 155 yards and two touchdowns through the air while adding 110 rushing yards on the ground — the first Virginia quarterback to hit the century mark on the ground since Brennan Armstrong in 2022. He looked calm, decisive, and dangerous every time he touched the ball.
The tone was set early. Virginia marched down the field for a 47-yard Will Bettridge field goal, then punched in a short Xavier Brown touchdown run after forcing a three-and-out. A 45-yard Pribula-to-Brown strike in the second quarter made it 17-0 at the half. Another deep shot — this on a 47-yard dime to Da’Shawn Martin — opened the second half and effectively ended any suspense.
Brown was everywhere, contributing both as a runner and receiver and finishing with two total touchdowns. The Virginia ground game as a whole was relentless, racking up 258 rushing yards and wearing down an NC State front that couldn’t keep up. A methodical 23-play, 12-minute drive in the fourth quarter that ended with a short Xay Davis touchdown run was pure Tony Elliott football: physical, patient, and demoralizing.
Defensively, the Cavaliers were just as impressive. Playing without star linebacker Kam Robinson, Virginia still held Bailey to 12-of-23 for 84 yards with an interception and a costly red-zone fumble. The Wolfpack managed just 76 rushing yards and never found a rhythm. By the time NC State finally scored late in the third quarter, the game was long gone.
This was more than just a season-opening win. It was a statement. After years of near-misses and frustration against the Wolfpack (who had won four straight in the series and hadn’t lost in Charlottesville since 2006), Virginia emphatically flipped the script. The Cavaliers are now 1-0 and sitting alone atop the ACC standings after Week 0.
Pribula’s arrival gives this offense a new dimension. The run game looks deep and physical. The defense, even short-handed, looks nasty. And Scott Stadium, sold out for the first time in nearly two decades, felt like a place opponents are going to hate visiting.
The schedule will get harder. Florida State, SMU, Duke, and the Commonwealth Cup still loom. But for one electric afternoon in late August, the Cavaliers looked every bit like a team that belongs in the ACC title conversation.
