Buzzkill: Hornets Drop Three Straight as Offense Hits Rock Bottom — But Coby White’s Return Sparks Hope
Weekly Wrap-Up: Charlotte Hornets
The Charlotte Hornets just lived through one of those weeks that tests the soul of a fan base. Sitting at 3-4 and riding a three-game losing streak heading into Monday’s home date with the surging Detroit Pistons, the Hive is officially in “prove-it” mode early in the 2026-27 season.
The Good (It Was Real, Even If Brief)
Early on, this new-look Hornets team showed real fight. They opened with a solid road win over Brooklyn, bounced back from a franchise-worst home embarrassment against Atlanta with a gritty 115-110 win over Miami, then rode Brandon Miller’s career-high 39-point masterclass to a 110-103 victory over Washington. Miller has been the clear alpha — averaging 24.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, and carrying a heavy usage load while the backcourt has been decimated by injury. Naz Reid, Grayson Allen, and Dennis Schröder have provided solid secondary production in stretches, and the defense has been respectable enough to keep them competitive.
The Ugly (And It Got Ugly Fast)
Then the wheels came off.
• At Detroit: 25 turnovers in an 89-97 loss.
• At Washington (NBA Cup): An absolute nightmare. 29.7% from the field, 79 points total — the lowest scoring output for the franchise in years. The offense looked completely stuck.
• Home vs. Philadelphia: A heartbreaker. Led late, then watched Tyrese Maxey drop 38 and the Sixers rip off a 13-0 closing run in a 109-104 defeat. Grayson Allen’s 27 off the bench (including seven threes) and Miller’s 24 weren’t enough.
The numbers don’t lie: Charlotte ranks dead last in offensive rating and near the bottom in scoring. The absence of Coby White (calf) and Kon Knueppel (hamstring) has left the half-court offense stagnant and the three-point shooting anemic. When Miller isn’t going nuclear, the well runs dry.
The Lifeline
Coby White is finally back. The North Carolina native makes his season debut Monday night against Detroit after missing the first seven games. Expect a minutes restriction, but his presence alone should inject much-needed creation, pace, and shooting. Coach Charles Lee has also indicated Knueppel is “right around the corner.” When those two return and join Miller, the original vision for this roster finally gets a real look.
Bottom Line
This was a bruising week that exposed every offensive flaw of a team still piecing itself together. But the calendar just flipped to November, White is healthy, and the talent is still there. The Hornets don’t need to panic — they need to get healthy and find consistency. One strong stretch could flip the narrative fast.
Hive Mentality stays alive. The sting is still coming.
