Louisville outlasts Virginia 34-17, Cavaliers fall to 2-4 on the season (10-8-22)

The Virginia Cavaliers (2-3) hosted the Louisville Cardinals (2-3) at Scott Stadium Saturday afternoon. Both teams came in this game looking for their first ACC victory of the season combining for a record of 0-5 in ACC play. Virginia high powered offense from last season is still looking for its identity. The transition in coaches has not been kind to the Virginia offense. Louisville would be with star quarterback Malik Cunningham, who was out with lingering effects from a concussion in last week’s game. Meaning Brock Domann would get the start for the Cardinals. In most cases, this would give the opposing team a huge advantage, but that would not be the case in this one.

The Cavaliers got off to an amazing start in the first quarter with a Will Bettridge 47-yard field goal and a 40-yard touchdown pass from Brennan Armstrong to Dontayvion Wicks to give Virginia a 10-0 lead at the end of the first. Then it was Louisville’s turn as they would score 20 unanswered points. Two field goals from Kicker James Turner (23,20 yards), a 44-yard scramble from Brock Domman & a 32-yard pass from Domman to Marshon Ford gave the Cardinals a 20-10 lead with 10:35 left in the 3rd quarter. Three minutes later, Virginia would make this a little closer with a Brennan Armstrong 11-yard touchdown run making this a 20-17 game. Louisville would add two 1-yard touchdowns from Jawhar Jordan & Trevion Cooley to seal the victory 34-17, winning their first ACC game of the year.

The Cavaliers have a bye this week. They will head to Georgia to take on Georgia Tech on October 20 at 7:30 PM. Their next home game will be against Miami on October 29 TBD
