Here are my opinions on opening game of the college football season for both Virginia and Richmond. The two in-state rivals come into 2018 with huge expectations and plans to take their programs to the next level.  Let’s get started.

1. Richmond started off fast with an interception that put them up 7-0. This was the last bright spot for the Spiders.

2. The Spiders broke down the Virginia defense early, however were not able to capitalize on a few wide open chances, along with a missed field goal early that killed the momentum.

3. Spiders quarterback Kevin Johnson, had two interceptions. He did not play bad, but must work on his accuracy and get more help from his offensive line along with his running game that could not reach forty-yards rushing. Big plays that were missed early, changed the tide of this game.

4. Virginia started off slow, but being an ACC team asserted their dominance.

5. Bryce Perkins and Jordan Ellis combined for 254 yards on the ground.

6. Perkins, the Junior quarterback was very impressive running around making big plays with his feet. The Spiders defense look confused on some of his runs, I did not see Perkins did get touched.

7. Perkins running ability is great, but going against better competition he must improve his throwing if Virginia wants to contend for bowl positioning later in the season.

8. Virginia defense must continue to improve, they were getting good pressure. They only had two sacks, but only being game one they will get better.

9. Olamide Zaccheaus is a weapon for Virginia, five catches for 101 yards. He plays running back, but should be moved to the slot. He is a very dynamic player.

10. Conclusion: The game was a little sloppy, but overall it was what we expected from both teams. Richmond will be better against competition that is more on their level. Virginia must continue to improve, as stated before they were lucky on a few spots in the first quarter and early into the second half where Richmond shot themselves in the foot.

Fordham @ Richmond next Saturday @ 6:30

Both teams should win in their contest.
