Squirrels & Senators Split Doubleheader, Senators Lead Series 2-1 (June 9, 2018)
By:Adam Falls
The Richmond Flying Squirrels played a day/night doubleheader against the Harrisburg Senators. Daniel Murphy from the Washington Nationals played in game 1 and went 0-2 with a lazy ground ball to first and a fly out. He made some good defensive plays at first, but overall he did not show a lot and he did not play in game 2. The Squirrels won Game 1, 3-0 behind Miguel Gomez’s home run with Dylan Davis and Jonah Arenado pitching in 1 RBI a piece. Jake McCasland got the win on the mound allowing only 3 hits in 5 innings pitched. Caleb Simpson earned the save by only pitching 1/3 of an inning.
Game 2 was a low scoring affair with no one scoring for the first 7 innings. In the top of the 8th, the Senators bats woke up and they scored three runs. Austin Davidson, Drew Ward, and Adam Brett Walker all came through with RBIs in the top half of the 8th. In the bottom of the 8th, the Squirrels put a rally together with clutch hits from Luigi Rodriguez and Ryan Howard. With a man on first and two outs Jerry Sands came to the plate and hit a long drive to center field the crowed went crazy as they all thought the game was over but Senators center fielder Hunter Jones had other plans. Jones climbed the wall and brought back Sands potential walk off winner to seal the win for the Senators. Overall it was a good night of baseball with the Squirrels earning the split with the Senators. Today, the Squirrels host the Senators at 1:05 PM at the Diamond.
