The new #2 team in the country, the Virginia Cavaliers (24-2, 12-2 ACC) hosted Georgia Tech (12-16, 4-11 ACC) Tuesday night. Unfortunately for Georgia Tech ,it was not a good trip. Virginia would win the ballgame 81-51. Georgia Tech had the lead for a short time in the early moments of the game., but the Yellow Jackets couldn’t keep up. Ty Jerome lead all scorers with 19 points. Teammate De’Andre Hunter scored 18 points in tonight’s efforts. Kyle Guy chipped in with 11 points. The Cavaliers as a whole shot 56% from the floor and had double-digit leads in rebounds & points in the paint. Coach Tony Bennett was able to go deep into his bench tonight, this is what he said Postgame…
We played solid tonight. We did what we had to do. And I thought the group at the end did a nice job. I was glad to get [Kody Stattmann] in there, see [Marco Anthony] get a nice dunk and [Francesco Badocchi]. To have the game in a spot where you could balance the minutes and get different looks at guys and lower that minute count, that’s always a positive. Sometimes in this league, you don’t have that opportunity, but we played well enough to be able to get everybody an opportunity, which I think is important.”
Georgia Tech was led by Jose Alvarado with 12 points and 4 assists. James Banks III (11 points) & Michael Devoe (10 points) helped keep the Yellow Jackets afloat during this game. The Yellow Jackets struggled shooting the basketball. Overall from the floor, Georgia Tech shoot 37.5% and under 30% (29.4) going 5-for-17 from behind the arc.
Thoughts
Virginia’s starting to look like the team that started the season off 16-0. Coach Bennett new line up of Clark, Diakite, Guy, Jerome & Hunter seems to be getting the team back on track. Only 8 turnovers to show in this game and a nice shooting percentage of 56 could be the spark they need to get mentally ready for the ACC & NCAA tournaments.
