St. Johns Walks Off Penn In NCAA Super Regional (6-1-24)

On a nice Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville, VA at Disharoon Park at Davenport Field, the St. Johns Red Storm took on the Penn University Quakers in the elimination game of the Super Regionals. Both teams ended up in this elimination game because of the results of yesterday’s play. Penn would lose to UVA 4-2, and St. Johns would lose to Mississippi State 5-2 in extra innings. Both teams are looking to avoid being eliminated, so it is expected for them to bring forth their best efforts.

The St. Johns Red Storm took a 1-0 lead after the 1st inning with a sac fly to center field. After a lead-off double in the top of the 2nd inning, the Penn University Quakers ties the ball game at 1. The Red Storm started the bottom of the 4th inning with a lead-off single, and then the next batter would hit an RBI double to centerfield to take a 2-1 lead. St. Johns pushes another runner across the plate with a sac fly to centerfield, making the score 3-1. The Quakers were able to load the bases in the top of the 5th but to no avail. In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Red Storm blast a two-run homer to extend their lead to 5-1. In the top of the 6th inning, Penn chips away at the deficit and makes the score 5-2.

The St. Johns Red Storm loads the bases in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Red Storm would add another run via HBP to extend their lead 6-2. The Penn University Quakers added another run off of a wild pitch. Then, the next pitch is driven up the middle for a two-run RBI to tie at 6. After the next batter was HBP, an RBI single made its way to left field for the 7-6 lead for the Quakers. The 7th inning rally continues with a 2-run RBI double to left field, making the score 9-6. The Red Storm managed to battle back in the bottom of the 8th. St. Johns would then hit a two-run home run to cut their deficit to 9-8. More clutch hitting for the Red Storm continued in the bottom of the 9th inning after a solo homer to left field tied the game at 9. Things would soon get chippy between the teams when a collision at home plate almost cleared the benches. This caused one of the St. Johns players to get ejected from the game. Finally, in the bottom of the 12th inning, the Red Storm walks it off with an RBI single up the middle. St. Johns Red Storm wins 10-9!
