CHICAGO, IL – Brittany Sykes was on a heater yesterday evening, guiding the Washington Mystics to a 79-72 come-from-behind victory over the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena. Sykes ultimately finished with 32 points, hitting four 3-pointers and shooting 13-of-24 from the floor.
Chicago (3-8) came out of the gate clicking on all cylinders, jumping out to a double-digit lead after the first quarter, led by Rebeecca Allen and Angel Reese. Sykes hit a 26-foot three-pointer at the 6:46 mark in the second quarter, making it 30-21, cutting the Sky’s lead down to single digits. However, Reese would come out of the timeout, converting a three-point play, followed by another driving layup, and finding Kamilia Cardoso for a layup to take their largest lead of 16.
The Mystics (5-7) trailed 44-32 by halftime. Coming out of halftime, Washington turned up the intensity on both ends, using seven forced turnovers to outscore Chicago 24-12 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, both teams opened up the frame by trading baskets with each other. With 3:15 left, Cardoso grabbed an offensive rebound, finishing for the score and a foul. She would hit the free throw to put the Sky within one point of tying the game.
On the next Chicago possession, Shakira Austin would make a big-time block on Reese’s go-ahead layup attempt, leading to Sykes faking out Reese on a turnaround inside jumper for the and-one bucket. The Mystics led 74-70 with 2:14 remaining.
Sykes sealed the game, grabbing an offensive rebound, resetting the shot clock, and putting up a leaning shot attempt from the paint that was short, but corralled by Kiki Irafen for the putback score. Ultimately, sealing the game by leading 77-72 with 26 seconds.
Citron finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Austin had nine points, nine rebounds, two steals, four blocks, and a game-high +23 rating when she was on the floor.
