WWE Night of Champions 2025, held on June 28, 2025, at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marked the 11th iteration of this storied premium live event (PLE). As the second Night of Champions event hosted in Saudi Arabia and the 13th WWE event under the company’s 10-year partnership with the Saudi Ministry of Sport, this show delivered a mix of championship clashes, tournament finals, and pivotal storyline developments. Unlike the traditional Night of Champions format, which typically features every main roster title defended, the 2025 event focused on only two championship matches while spotlighting the finals of the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments, setting the stage for SummerSlam. With a sold-out crowd of over 25,000 fans, the event was a spectacle of nostalgia, high-stakes rivalries, and emerging stars.

Match Card:

King of the Ring Final: Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton

Queen of the Ring Final: Jade Cargill vs. Asuka

United States Championship: Jacob Fatu (c) vs. Solo Sikoa

Street Fight: Rhea Ripley vs. Raquel Rodriguez

Sami Zayn vs. Karrion Kross

Undisputed WWE Championship: John Cena (c) vs. CM Punk

King of the Ring Final: Cody Rhodes def. Randy Orton

Recap: The opening match pitted former mentor and protege, Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes, in a highly anticipated clash, their first singles encounter since 2013. The two have a rich history, having been part of the Legacy stable from 2008 to 2010. Rhodes targeted Orton’s back after a superplex left “The Viper” reeling, delivering two Cody Cutters, including an avalanche version. Orton countered with an RKO, but Rhodes kicked out. A pivotal moment came when Orton hesitated to use his banned Punt Kick, allowing Rhodes to lock in a Figure Four. Orton attempted to use an exposed turnbuckle, but Rhodes secured the victory. Post-match, Rhodes vowed to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Championship at SummerSlam, hinting at a potential rematch with John Cena. Orton’s frustration and hesitation suggested seeds for a future heel turn, possibly reigniting their rivalry later in 2025.

Analysis: This match was a strong opener, blending technical wrestling with storytelling. Rhodes’ subtle heelish tactics, such as targeting Orton’s injured back, hinted at a character shift for “The American Nightmare.” The finish kept both competitors strong, with Orton’s loss attributed to his hesitation, leaving room for future conflict.

Queen of the Ring Final: Jade Cargill def. Asuka

Recap: Jade Cargill, a rising star with limited singles experience in WWE, faced veteran Asuka in a high-stakes final. Asuka dominated early, targeting Cargill’s knee and applying the Asuka Lock. Cargill powered out with a sit-out power bomb and countered Asuka’s Empress Impact with her signature Jaded to secure the biggest win of her career. The match saw some timing issues, with the two struggling to find chemistry, possibly due to recovering from injuries in late 2024 and early 2025. The Saudi crowd favored Asuka, but Cargill’s victory postponed her as a top contender, setting up a likely SummerSlam match against WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton, with Naomi’s Money in the Bank briefcase looming as a potential factor.

Analysis: While not as polished as hoped, Cargill’s win was the right call to elevate her as a future face of WWE’s women’s division. Asuka’s performance showcased her resilience, but the lack of chemistry slightly detracted from the match. The outcome creates intriguing possibilities for SummerSlam, especially with Naomi’s involvement.

United States Championship match: Solo Sikoa def. Jacob Fatu (c)

Recap: This family feud saw cousins Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa clash after weeks of tension, sparked by Sikoa’s jealousy over Fatu’s U.S. title win. Fatu dominated early with a German suppler, but Sikoa gained the upper hand with interference from a returning Tonga Loa (out since Survivor Series: WarGames 2024) and the WWE debut of Hikuleo (now Tala Tonga), alongside JC Mateo. This new faction, an extension of the Bloodline storyline, overwhelmed Fatu, allowing Sikoa to hit the Samoan Spike for the title change. The interference-heavy finish hinted at a larger Bloodline civil war, with speculation about Roman Reigns’ imminent return.

Analysis: The title change elevated Sikoa as a key player in The Bloodline saga, while the introduction of Hikuleo and Tonga Loa’s return added depth to the faction. Fatu’s loss didn’t diminish his credibility, as the interference kept him strong. The match was solid but overshadowed by the storyline developments.

Street Fight: Rhea Ripley def. Raquel Rodriguez

Recap: This grudge match, the first Street Fight at a WWE Saudi Arabia event, stemmed from Rodriguez’s alliance with Liv Morgan and The Judgment Day, exacerbated by Ripley costing Rodriguez in the Queen of the Ring tournament. Both women leveraged their power-based styles, using weapons like kendo sticks and tables. Ripley secured the win with a Riptide through a table, solidifying her dominance. The match played to both competitors’ strengths, though Morgan’s absence due to a legitimate shoulder injury shifted the focus to this one-off encounter.

Analysis: The Street Fight delivered on physicality and provided a historic moment for WWE’s Saudi events. Ripley’s victory keeps her as a top star, while Rodriguez remains a credible threat. The match was short but effective, though it lacked the deeper storyline context of other bouts.

Sami Zayn def. Karrion Kross

Recap: Karrion Kross had been taunting Sami Zayn for months, claiming Zayn’s failure to win a world title stemmed from his inability to embrace a darker edge. The feud culminated after a confrontation on the June 23 Raw, where Zayn punched Kross, leading to this match. Kross dominated with his physical style, but his trash-talking backfired when Zayn caught him with a Helluva Kick in the corner for the win. The finish suggested a continuation of the storyline, with Kross potentially pushing Zayn further toward a darker persona.

Analysis: The match was concise but effective in advancing the narrative. Zayn’s underdog victory resonated with the crowd, but Kross’s momentum as a heel wasn’t fully capitalized on, marking the outcome feel slightly counterproductive unless the story continues.

Undisputed WWE Championship match: John Cena (c) def. CM Punk

Recap: The main event saw John Cena, on his retirement tour, defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against longtime rival CM Punk in a match billed as potentially their final encounter. The feud, reigniting their iconic 2011 rivalry, was fueled by Cena’s heel persona vowing to “ruin wrestling” by retiring as champion, and Punk’s mission to stop him for the fans. The match was a masterclass of callbacks, with Cena countering a GTS into an STF and Punk reversing into an Anaconda Vise. Cena hit multiple Attitude Adjustments, but Punk kicked out repeatedly. The match took a chaotic turn when Cena accidentally knocked out the referee, and Seth Rollins, accompanied by Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed, interfered, attacking Punk and putting him through the announce table. Despite Punk hitting another GTS, Cena capitalized on the chaos to deliver a final Attitude Adjustment for the win. The interference, including a brief appearance by Penta and Zayn to counter Rollins’ group, drew criticism for overbooking but kept the feud alive for potential rematches.

Analysis: This match lived up to the hype of the Cent-Punk rivalry, delivering high drama and technical prowess, though the excessive interference slightly detracted from the clean storytelling of their past encounters. Cena’s retention sets up a SummerSlam showdown with Cody Rhodes, while Rollins’ involvement and the crowd’s “OTC” chants for Roman Reigns hint at a multi-man title picture.

Night of Champions 2025 successfully balanced nostalgia with forward momentum. John Cena’s retention and Cody Rhodes’ King of the Ring win set up a blockbuster SummerSlam main event, while Jade Cargill’s Queen of the Ring victory positions her as a rising star. The Bloodline’s evolution with new members and Roman Reigns’ looming return promises a major storyline arc. The event also highlighted WWE’s commitment to its Saudi partnership, with the sold-out Kingdom Arena reinforcing the region’s importance to the company’s global strategy. However, the reduced number of title matches and injury-related cancellations suggests WWE is adapting the Night of Champions concept to focus on broader narrative goals rather than strictly championship defenses.
