WASHINGTON D.C. — Four Mystics starters finished with double-digit scoring, guiding them to a 69-58 victory over the Seattle Storm, Saturday evening at CareFirst Arena.
Washington (12-12) led 40-35 at halftime. Entering the third quarter, Washington held Seattle (15-11) scoreless for nearly the first six minutes, eclipsing a 15-point lead. However, the Storm countered with an 11-0 run to open the fourth quarter, holding the Mystics scoreless for six straight minutes. Seattle’s run cut the Mystics down to 60-56 at 5:02, the closest they would get for the remainder of the game.
After Erica Wheeler made a layup to make it a 63-58 game with 2:23 on the clock, Brittney Sykes would make back-to-back layups on D.C’s offensive possession to keep the game out of reach.
Shakira Austin was Washington’s leading scorer with 14 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds for a double-double performance. Sug Sutton scored 13 points, rookie sensation Sonia Citron, and Sykes each scored 11 points.
Nneka Ogwumike (18 points) and Wheeler (12 points) were the Storm’s only double-figure scorers of the night.
The Storm shot only 32.8 % from the field and 23.1 % from behind the arc.
D.C. outrebounded (44-28), had more assists (20-16), and scored more points in the paint (42-30) than Seattle.
