Tribe pulls it out with a second-half comeback delayed but right on time…

With the wind came a thunderstorm delay and a ton of exciting new Tribe fans ready to see this year’s team and when I mean packed, I’m talking about the parking lots were packed and each year under the Mike London era they seem to fill more and more lots.  With Maine in town, this is the first CAA game of the season and will set the tone for the conference as reigning champion, Richmond has departed for the Patriot League.  After multiple weather delays, we finally got underway with football as the Tribe started like last week with a missed opportunity on their first possession, with Maine marching down the field for the first score of the game by Sincere Baines. After another stop by Maine, they march down the field on the feet of their quarterback Carter Peevy who scrambled for a 45-yard touchdown run to put Maine up 14-0.

If you had guessed how the Tribe would be on offense usually one would say ground and pound.  Junior Tyler Hughes is looking the part as this season the Tribe has not run the ball as well as they have passed it.  Waking up in the second quarter he passed for 68 yards and a touchdown on 5-6 passing.  Maine led at halftime 17-7 with a key defensive stop by the Tribe and a missed opportunity with the chance to score before the half ended.

In the third quarter, the Tribe continued to chip away with another touchdown in the Air as they took the lead 21-17 with back-to-back lead touchdown drives by Hughes after a blocked punt to put the offense in position to score.  At the end of the third quarter, Maine takes the lead back and we have a shootout 24-21.

Maine drives down again and manages to put three points on the board and with 7 minutes left the Tribe are in position to have a game-winning drive. They drive down in 3 minutes and 45 seconds to cap off a touchdown drive to take the lead by one 28-27.  On the following possession, Jalen Jones makes an interception on a tipped play to secure the win for the Tribe.  Hughes finished the game by going for two touchdowns and 200 total yards propelling the Tribe to their first victory of the season.  Next week the Tribe travels to Charlottesville for an in-state battle against UVA.
