In a game that had everything — momentum swings, star performances, and a dramatic second-half surge — the No. 22 North Carolina Tar Heels executed a textbook comeback to defeat No. 14 Virginia 85-80 on Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA. The victory not only snapped Virginia’s 11-game home winning streak but also marked a signature ACC road win for Carolina, underscoring the deep rivalry between these longtime conference foes.
A Tale of Two Halves
Virginia came out hot, asserting early dominance and building a 16-point lead behind efficient offense and strong interior play. The Cavaliers stormed ahead with a first-half edge — leading 43-34 at halftime — buoyed by contributions across the roster and a confident home crowd. Thijs DeRidder continued his impressive scoring form with 20 points and seven rebounds, proving once again why he’s one of UVA’s most reliable offensive weapons. However, the Tar Heels flipped the script after the break. UNC relied on a balanced surge in scoring, defensive adjustments, and clutch late-game execution, outscoring Virginia 51-37 in the second half. Jarin Stevenson proved to be the story of the comeback, scoring all of his 17 points in the final 20 minutes, including a pivotal three-point play late that helped swing the lead back to Carolina. Caleb Wilson also delivered with a team-leading 20 points in the contest.
Game-Deciding Moments
With roughly 3:50 to play and Virginia clinging to a narrow lead, UNC capitalized on its momentum. A series of key buckets from Stevenson and Seth Trimble gave the Tar Heels control, and they held off Virginia’s attempts to respond down the stretch. Carolina’s late run — outscoring Virginia 18-9 over the final 5:25 — ultimately proved decisive, turning a competitive game into a hard-earned road victory.

Statistical Storyline
The statistical battle was a fascinating microcosm of the game’s narrative:
• Virginia: Strong early shooting and rebounding helped build the first-half lead. DeRidder paced the Cavaliers as usual, while Virginia had to grind through long possessions and used precision scoring to keep UNC at bay early.
• North Carolina: Outscored Virginia in the second half thanks to improved offensive rhythm. Carolina’s ability to turn defense into transition opportunities and win crucial possessions late underscored their competitive toughness.
Looking Ahead
For Virginia, the loss ends a thrilling run at home that had seen them rise to No. 14 in the AP Poll and solidify their position in the ACC standings. They’ll look to rebound and refine their second-half execution as the schedule tightens.
North Carolina — improving to 16-4 overall and 4-3 in ACC play — now carries confidence from a dramatic road win back into league competition. The Tar Heels have shown balanced scoring and late-game toughness, two traits that could pay dividends as March approaches.
