WASHINGTON D.C. — The Washington Mystics defeated the Chicago Sky, 90-72, at CareFirst Arena in both teams’ first game of the Commissioner’s Cup in the young season.
Washington (4-4) picked up their first home victory and was led by Shakira Austin, who scored a team-high 17 points on 5-for-13 shooting from the field. Austin also grabbed eight rebounds, with three steals and a block.
Kiki Iriafen also caused Chicago (3-6) trouble, pouring in 15 points and 11 rebounds for another strong showing on both sides of the ball.
Second-year star Washington guard Sonia Citron missed tonight’s contest with a foot injury, with rookie Cotie McMahon taking her place in the starting lineup.
In the second quarter, Washington created some separation from Chicago in part due to a 14-2 run within the first five minutes that put them ahead by double digits for the first time on the night. During that span, Washington’s on-ball pressure caused Chicago to turn the ball over or forced them into contested shots that weren’t falling.
McMahon was active in the quarter, scoring four points, dishing out two assists, and coming up with two steals, providing energy on both ends of the floor.
Washington outscored Chicago in the third and fourth quarters, guiding them to hold onto their double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Kamilia Cardoso provided Chicago with its main source of offense, finishing with a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double on a night that was quiet for the other starters. Sydney Taylor and Elizabeth Williams scored 15 & 10 points, respectively, off the bench for Chicago.
The Mystics outscored the Sky 46-38 in the paint and converted 20-of-32 free throws.
