Second-Half Turnovers Cost ODU as Monarchs Fall to East Carolina, 20-17 (9-19-26)

NORFOLK, Va. — September 19, 2026 — For one quarter Saturday night, Old Dominion looked ready to seize control of its regional matchup with East Carolina.
The Monarchs erased an early deficit with a 17-point second-quarter surge, getting contributions from their offense, defense and special teams to take a seven-point advantage into halftime.
But two costly second-half turnovers changed everything.
East Carolina scored 10 unanswered points after the break, including a 67-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Old Dominion couldn’t find an answer as the Monarchs fell 20-17 at S.B. Ballard Stadium.
The loss dropped ODU to 1-2 on the season and extended East Carolina’s advantage in the all-time series to six consecutive victories.
For the Monarchs, it was a frustrating ending to a game that appeared to be within their grasp.
Pirates Strike First
East Carolina capitalized on an early ODU special-teams mistake to produce the game’s first points.
After a mishandled punt snap gave ECU the football at the Monarchs’ 28-yard line, the Pirates reached into their bag of tricks.
Quarterback Emory Williams threw a backward pass to wide receiver Jason Dickerson, who then found Ja’Keith Hamilton for a 25-yard touchdown.
Just like that, ODU trailed 7-0.
But the Monarchs responded.
And for much of the second quarter, they controlled the game.
Monarchs Come Alive
ODU got on the scoreboard when Nathanial Eichner connected on a 38-yard field goal, cutting East Carolina’s advantage to 7-3.
The Monarchs’ defense then delivered the play that completely changed the energy inside S.B. Ballard Stadium.
Justin Watts forced a fumble from Kanen Hamlett, and Daevon Iles scooped up the loose football and raced 23 yards for a touchdown.
ODU had turned defense into offense and grabbed its first lead of the night, 10-7.
The momentum continued.
After the Monarchs’ defense forced another ECU punt, Devin Roche returned it 38 yards to the Pirates’ 35-yard line, putting ODU in excellent field position.
Quarterback Quinn Henicle made sure the opportunity didn’t go to waste.
Henicle Extends the Lead
Henicle connected with Kendall Harris to move the chains before making the biggest offensive play of ODU’s night himself.
The quarterback broke free for an 18-yard touchdown run, pushing the Monarchs’ advantage to 17-7.
It continued an impressive rushing touchdown streak for Henicle, who has now scored on the ground in each of his five career starts.
For a stretch of just over five minutes in the second quarter, ODU had scored 17 unanswered points.
The Monarchs appeared to have complete control.
East Carolina managed to stop the bleeding just before halftime when Noah Perez kicked a 36-yard field goal, trimming ODU’s advantage to 17-10 heading into the locker room.
Still, the Monarchs were 30 minutes away from securing a significant home victory.
One Play Changes Everything
ODU received the second-half kickoff and immediately began moving the football.
Roche ripped off a 41-yard run, putting the Monarchs into ECU territory and seemingly continuing the momentum from the second quarter.
Then came the play that changed the game.
Facing third-and-long, Henicle attempted to make something happen through the air.
East Carolina defensive back Ayden Duncanson intercepted the pass and returned it 67 yards for a touchdown.
Instead of ODU potentially extending its advantage, the game was suddenly tied 17-17.
It was the kind of momentum swing that can define a football game.
Unfortunately for the Monarchs, another turnover was still to come.
Another Promising Drive Slips Away
ODU regrouped and once again began moving the football behind Henicle and Roche.
The Monarchs reached East Carolina territory and appeared poised to regain the lead.
But ECU’s Kieran Davis forced Roche to fumble, and Miles Parker recovered the football at the Pirates’ 32-yard line.
For the second time in the second half, an ODU drive with promise ended in a turnover.
This time, East Carolina converted the mistake into the game’s decisive points.
The Pirates put together a methodical 12-play, 77-yard drive that consumed more than seven minutes.
Perez finished the possession with a 24-yard field goal, putting ECU ahead 20-17 with 9:39 remaining.
It was East Carolina’s first lead since early in the second quarter.
It was also the final scoring play of the night.
ODU Can’t Find the Late Answer
The Monarchs still had time.
ODU received two more possessions after falling behind, but the offense couldn’t recreate the success it found during the second quarter.
The Monarchs managed only one first down on those final two opportunities.
East Carolina eventually regained possession and ran out the clock.
A night that once had ODU ahead by 10 ended with the Monarchs watching the Pirates celebrate a three-point victory on their home field.
Roche Leads the Ground Attack
Despite the loss, Devin Roche continued to demonstrate his importance to the ODU offense.
Roche carried the football 18 times for 102 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per attempt.
His 41-yard run to begin the second half was the Monarchs’ longest rushing play of the night.
Henicle added 73 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, giving ODU two major threats on the ground.
Together, Roche and Henicle accounted for 175 of ODU’s 180 rushing yards.
The Monarchs actually outrushed East Carolina 180-173.
Through the air, however, ODU struggled to generate consistent production.
Henicle completed 8 of 20 passes for 94 yards with one interception.
Blackmon Makes His First Catch Count
One of ODU’s bright spots came from Zialis Blackmon.
Blackmon’s first career reception went for 42 yards, the Monarchs’ longest completion of the game.
The play helped set up Eichner’s second-quarter field goal and provided another glimpse of a young offensive weapon who could become more involved as the season progresses.
Roche also recorded a career-long 25-yard reception.
Those explosive plays showed what the Monarchs’ offense can produce.
The challenge moving forward will be creating them more consistently.
Defense Gives ODU Opportunities
Old Dominion’s defense gave the team chances throughout the night.
Mario Thompson led the Monarchs with nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Jack Forrest added 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Watts’ forced fumble led directly to Iles’ defensive touchdown, while ODU held East Carolina to only 276 total yards.
The Pirates managed just 103 passing yards.
ODU finished with 274 total yards itself, illustrating just how evenly matched the two teams were.
The difference ultimately came down to a handful of plays.
East Carolina turned one interception directly into seven points and converted ODU’s second turnover into the drive that produced the game-winning field goal.
A Painful Opportunity Lost
For Old Dominion, this one will sting.
The Monarchs had a 10-point lead.
They had momentum.
Their defense was creating plays.
Their rushing attack was producing.
But the second half belonged to East Carolina.
ODU was held scoreless over the final 30 minutes while the Pirates scored the final 13 points of the game.
The Monarchs also committed nine penalties for 95 yards, another area that will need to be cleaned up as conference play begins.
At 1-2, ODU now has little time to dwell on the loss.
Because what’s coming next is one of the biggest games on the schedule.

Old Dominion remains at S.B. Ballard Stadium for its Sun Belt Conference opener against James Madison on September 26.

Old Dominion showed during its 17-point second quarter that it had the ability to control Saturday night’s game.
