CHARLOTTESVILLE — For the better part of three hours Friday night, Virginia looked like the better team.

They controlled the clock. They controlled the line of scrimmage. They held the ACC’s leading rusher in check. They led 13-7 at the half and 16-13 with three minutes left. And yet when the final whistle blew at Scott Stadium, the Cavaliers walked off the field with another gut-punch loss, 19-16 to Duke.

It was the first home defeat of the season for Tony Elliott’s group, dropping them to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. More importantly, it felt like a season-defining moment that went the wrong way.

Jekail Middlebrook was the clear bright spot. The running back delivered the best performance of his UVA career, ripping off 117 yards on 24 carries and punching in the Cavaliers’ only touchdown on a 1-yard plunge in the first quarter. He was physical, decisive, and the one consistent bright spot on an offense that continues to leave points on the field.

The defense did its part for most of the night. Nate Sheppard, the ACC’s top rusher, was limited to just 55 yards on 15 carries — 32 of those coming on his early touchdown run. Virginia forced multiple three-and-outs and largely bottled up Duke’s offense when Walker Eget was sidelined with a finger injury in the first half.

But football is a game of finishing, and Virginia once again failed to close.

Will Bettridge’s 30-yard field goal with three minutes remaining gave the Hoos a 16-13 lead and seemingly put them in control. What followed was pure heartbreak. Duke drove 75 yards in under two minutes, and on second-and-8 from the Virginia 28, the Blue Devils pulled out the trick play that will live in the nightmares of every Cavalier fan for the next several months.

Walker Eget flipped a lateral to Sheppard. The running back then lofted a perfect 28-yard strike to a wide-open Brody Keefe in the end zone. Just like that, 19-16 Duke with 1:14 left. The missed extra point gave Virginia a chance, but Beau Pribula’s hurried fourth-down heave was intercepted by Patrick Smith-Young, sealing the loss.

The offense’s inability to finish drives continues to haunt this team. Virginia converted just one of four red-zone trips into a touchdown. Conservative play-calling near the goal line and a couple of costly turnovers (a Pribula fumble and the late interception) proved decisive. Pribula finished 15-of-24 for 158 yards, but the lack of explosive plays and timely execution left the Hoos settling for field goals too often.

This one stings differently. Virginia had the ball, the lead, and the home crowd. They had the better of the play for most of the night. And still, they found a way to lose.

The Cavaliers now head into a brutal stretch needing wins simply to reach bowl eligibility. Next up is a road trip to No. 17 Wake Forest. The margin for error is gone.

Middlebrook showed what this team can be when the running game is rolling. The defense proved it can still be stingy. But until Virginia learns how to finish games — and convert opportunities into touchdowns instead of field goals — nights like this will keep happening.

Scott Stadium deserved better. The players who battled for four quarters deserved better. Right now, this team is still searching for answers.
