On Sunday afternoon, at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA, the Virginia Cavaliers faced off against the Boston College Eagles. This was the first conference game of the season for both teams. The Cavaliers have been on a three-game skid and are looking to get back into the win column. Boston College also have been on a three-game losing streak of their own. With both teams desperate to get out of their funk, the competitiveness of this game should be at an all-time high.
From the opening tip, Boston College took command of the game by forcing Virginia into some early turnovers. This wasn’t an ideal start for the Cavs because they would never possess a lead in this game. Other than the early turnovers, UVA couldn’t buy a basket in the game. UVA had plenty of good looks at the basket, but the shots just weren’t falling. It didn’t help that Boston College’s T’yana Todd caught fire in the first half, especially in the opening quarter. She would go on to make her first four 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer at the end of the first quarter. Todd scored 14 points in the first quarter and went into the half with a team and game-high of 19 points. UVA’s Latasha Lattimore tried to keep her team within striking distance at the half with her 11 points. Going into halftime, the Boston College Eagles kept the Cavaliers at bay with a 41-28 lead.
Coming out of halftime, the Cavaliers were looking forward to coming out strong and making a run to get back into the ball game. However, the poor shooting continued for them, especially from the 3-point line. In the second half, both teams had their moments of sloppy play but Boston College maintained their lead. The Cavs continued to fight and make a run, but the Eagles managed to knock down a timely basket to stop any momentum from building up. The Boston College Eagles would go on to win 72-57 and snap their three-game losing streak, and at the same time extend the Cavaliers’ losing streak to four games. Despite being on the losing end of today’s matchup, Latasha Lattimore and Kymora Johnson led UVA in scoring in the contest. Hopefully, this losing streak comes to an end in their next game, which takes place on December 17th at home against the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks.
