One of the hardest things to do in college sports is win on the road. What is even more difficult is winning on the road when you haven’t won a single game all season. That is what the Old Dominion Monarchs were faced with over the weekend. The assignment was simple and understood by everyone representing ODU – win by any means necessary.
The running game has always been a huge issue for ODU. It hasn’t been easy trying to find an identity offensively for this team. They may not have an identity offensively, however they know that they need to be a power running team with all hands on deck. That means mixing it up a bit and going a non-traditional route at times. The backfield which includes Aaron Young and Bryce Duke should not have to carry the load alone.
Sometimes the wide receivers should get involved and who ever is leading the team at Quarterback needs to get involved too. We see something similar in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens. They have the ability to have QB Lamar Jackson, RB Derrick Henry, and WR Zay Flowers become lethal in the backfield. Ultimately, opening the offense up in this way will open things up in the passing game too and all parties involved will be happy at the end of the day.
That formula to winning has earned ODU their first win of the season as they defeated the Bowling Green Falcons 30-27. A win is a win at the end of the day, however this certainly was not an easy win by any means for the Monarchs. They loss the total yardage battle in this game despite dominating yards on the ground. ODU will look to build upon this win as they head to Coastal Carolina to take on the Chanticleers Saturday October 5th at 7PM ET.
