The #4 Virginia Cavaliers came into Monday’s contest vs. the Morgan State Bears with a 7-0 record for the 3rd straight season. The Bears have had some struggles to start this season. With a 2-4 record, the Bears were hoping to get things on the right track. Unfortunately for Morgan State, tonight would not be that night.
The Cavs started the game off on fire, going 7-for-7 from the field. Four of the seven shots were from behind the 3-point line. The Cavs finished the first half shooting a season high 65% from the floor. Sophomore De’Andre Hunter & Junior Kyle Guy lead the Cavs in scoring with 15 points a piece. Brandon Key controlled the boards for the Cavs with nine rebounds and chipped in with six points. On the defensive side of things, Virginia held Morgan State to 25.9% shooting for the game. Ty Jerome was aggressive all night tallying five steals, a career-high for the Junior. Another impressive feat on the night, the Cavs held the Bears scoreless for 8 minutes in the 2nd Half. The Cavs would go on to win 83-45 moving to 8-0 on the season.
Virginia Head Coach Tony Bennett had this say about his team after the game:
“It was good to see a lot of guys get opportunities to play. We’re going to need everyone. Obviously, [we] started out shooting the ball well. Guys played hard and a lot of guys got experience, so I thought it was a positive night in that regard.”
Virginia has a huge chip on their shoulder. For the last few years Virginia has been considered one of the top defensive of teams in the nation but in many people eyes nothing to show for all the hard work. This Virginia Team seems more focus then past teams. Only time will tell how far they can this season.
