Connecticut’s Big Fourth Quarter Propels Them Over Washington  (5-17-24)

Uncasville, CT- DeWanna Bonner and DiJoani Carrington led the Connecticut Sun in a come-from-behind effort in the fourth quarter to defeat the Washington Mystics 84-77 on Friday evening.  Bonner came up huge in the fourth quarter scoring 14 of her 22 points. She also added six rebounds and six steals. The Mystics led 62-56 with 8:18 remaining and from then on Connecticut (2-0) took over. The Sun went on a 15-0 run to take a 71-62 lead with a little under four minutes remaining. Washington (0-2) would cut it down to as close as 75-73 at the 1:50 mark after Julie Vandoo had a layup-and-one. But the Mystics were unable to overcome the Sun’s offense as they were unable to tie or regain the lead. Connecticut outscored Washington 32-21 in the final quarter.

Carrington had a complete overall game dropping 21 points with four rebounds, three assists, one steal, and a block. Veteran Alyssa Thomas flirted with her second straight triple-double dishing out 13 points, eleven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Guard Karlie Samuelson led Washington with 18 points knocking down four threes, tying her career-high in a game. Vandoo added 12 points & eight assists, and Shakira Austin finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Washington has now dropped 9 of its last 10 games against the Sun and has not beaten them since June 19th, 2022 in a 71-63 victory. Mystics guard Brittney Sykes left the game early in the first quarter after injuring her left ankle and did not return.
