Last year in the NFC championship, many people were critical of Dan Campbell’s decision to go for it twice on fourth down rather than kick the field goals. Many said it was Coach Campbell letting his do-or-die mindset get in the way, while others believed the kicker just wasn’t reliable. Last night against the Houston Texans, proved we might never have those scenarios again.
There is no denying the fact that the Detroit Lions love going for it on fourth down. They go for it more than anybody else in the league. Why wouldn’t you? The Detroit Lions have had a high-powering offense for the last 2 seasons. Last night proved to be a stepping stone in the Brad Holmes and Coach Campbell era.
Faced with a fourth and 11, Coach Campbell made the call to let rookie sensation Jake Bates kick a 58-yard field goal rather than risk it. Bates made the 58-yard field goal to tie and won the game with a walk-off 52-yard field goal. Bates who was selling bricks in Houston a year ago is perfect 14 for 14 in the season so far.
The Lions last night proved they have the team can battle adversity and take out kneecaps when they get knocked down. They do this by winning offense, defense, and special teams. There is no weak link in the Detroit Lions and are clear favorites to reach the Super Bowl this year.
