The mountains have a new mascot. After decades as the Salem Red Sox, Boston’s Single-A affiliate is officially turning the page — and turning heads — as the Salem RidgeYaks. The organization unveiled the new name and identity this weekend, marking a major rebrand that connects the franchise more closely to its Southwest Virginia roots.

Beginning with the 2026 season, the RidgeYaks will take the field at Carilion Clinic Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark, embracing a look and feel that celebrates the Blue Ridge Mountains, outdoor adventure, and local pride.

Why “RidgeYaks”?

The name pays homage to two core pieces of Salem’s personality: its geography and its spirit. “Ridge” reflects the area’s stunning mountain backdrop. At the same time “Yaks” draws inspiration from both the hardy mountain animal and the outdoor lifestyle that defines the region — from kayaking on the Roanoke River to hiking McAfee Knob.

It’s a name designed to feel unique and distinctly Salem, while still maintaining a link to the club’s history and its ongoing partnership with the Boston Red Sox.

The new colors blend cool mountain blues with warm gold accents — a nod to Blue Ridge sunsets — while a touch of red remains as a subtle bridge to the team’s Boston connection.

A New Look, Same Mission

With the new name comes a new mascot: Mac the Yak, a mountain explorer with horns, hiking gear, and plenty of personality. He replaces longtime mascot Mugsy the St. Bernard, who’ll step back from his full-time role after years as the face of baseball in Salem.

A Farewell to Mugsy — Sort Of

Fans don’t have to say a full goodbye, though. The team confirmed that Mugsy will no longer serve as the RidgeYaks’ primary mascot, but he’ll still make special appearances throughout the season. It’s a heartfelt way to honor the club’s past while embracing the next chapter.

Tradition on Tap

Even with the new identity, not everything is changing. The wildly popular Salem Beer Mongerspromotion will continue every Thursday night, giving fans a familiar favorite as they get used to cheering for a new name.

What’s Staying the Same

Beyond the branding, the baseball itself remains steady. The RidgeYaks are still the Single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, developing the next generation of big-league talent. Home games will continue to be played at Carilion Clinic Field, and the club’s front office, community outreach, and family-first fan experience aren’t going anywhere.

A Community Connection

For General Manager Allen Lawrence, the rebrand is about more than merchandise or logos — it’s about reflecting the spirit of the people who fill the stands.

“This identity celebrates who we are here in Salem,” Lawrence said in the team’s official announcement. “The outdoors, the adventure, and the community that make this such a special place.”

It’s a sentiment that’s resonating throughout the Roanoke Valley. Fans online have largely praised the new design and direction, calling it one of Minor League Baseball’s most creative new looks in years.

What’s Next

The RidgeYaks will make their official on-field debut on April 2, 2026, when they host the Delmarva Shorebirds on Opening Day. Between now and then, expect to see plenty of new merchandise, community events, and sneak peeks at the uniforms and mascot in action.

In a landscape where Minor League Baseball teams often embrace quirky or locally flavored rebrands, Salem’s new look feels like the right balance — fun and fresh, yet rooted in authenticity.

A new name, a new mascot, and the same hometown heart. The RidgeYaks are ready to climb.
