The Welsh train has left gold on every stop he has been a part of in his coaching career but what is really important to the man driving the train?  If you know him, you will find many stops along the route to this journey; however, I have a distinct memory of watching him come up behind me and say, “I want in,” and he was serious.  I never forgot as I watched a young talented kid years above his age and just fearless wanting all the smoke. Not one or two years in age difference, I am talking about a year’s difference so I at 10,11,12 had the pleasure of watching my little cousin dominate and then want more coming to play with the older kids at 5,6, and 7. This is when most people confuse arrogance with passion and the ability to balance that comes with growth and experiences that allow one to prosper from those experiences and be able to drive and lead an engine of successful players, teams, and organizations that he has been a part of.   If you ask him, he probably wants to talk about the one or two that got away but the ability to produce Division I athletes in high school basketball is not something that comes every day.

Constantly learning the X’s and O’s he started to find out he could relate and get the kids to gravitate towards him and let me tell you something, that is a skill many people would kill for and just simply do not possess.  Not only does he relate but then he brings the old school mentality of today is another day to get better. In 2017 this vision came into play as he became the Woodside head boys’ basketball coach and has stuck to the script which he lives by. Hard work and constant challenges put these kids in a position to take on more than just a basketball game and that has been his mission from the very beginning.  Finding many ways to produce kids with opportunities to be successful and play basketball on the next level has been nothing short of elite.  Not only is he training and developing players at Woodside High School, but he also has an eye for talent as he has constantly built Elite AAU teams year after year.  Every year he has put a team in the circuit and there has been a Division I player on his roster.  Independent…Check, Boo Williams…..Check, Adidas……..Check so just understand that the passion, skill, and ability to relate to the players is what is brewing in this pot and nothing else.

Most people’s view on programs like that is they get everybody but again this guy has been watching his young bulls play in middle school and knows what is coming up to him.  This is just another sign of a person who loves what they do.  Back-to-back state titles as a player and coach are nothing short of greatness and the fact that he is just scratching the surface is a thing of pure beauty.  Looking to compete for another state title this season but in a totally different way has Welsh excited more than ever to take this journey with his team.

One thing that changes every human in some form or manner is having a child.  Welsh stated that his son Lawson is the best thing to have ever happened to him and wants Lawson to run his own race at his own pace.  One thing Stef is showing Lawson is the many ways his son is talented and can excel. Welsh states that “He can really be special on the football field or basketball court as he moves very well for his size and has an I.Q. to back all of the talent up”.  This process has been a hard reset for someone who has been successful yet feels the pressure of accomplishing his own goals.  It was when he started standing on the sideline watching Lawson and the young bulls perform, execute, and show the true love of the game.  Being around that energized Welsh to continue to challenge himself and become a better man with all of the success.  Normally one would base in the light of success and normally that is how the perception is but in this case, it made Stefan reflect more and begin to appreciate the process and understand the position he had built for himself and those around him.

Coming into his ninth season as the head coach of Woodside, Welsh made another splash changing AAU circuits from Nike to Adidas.  When you know Stefan he is a Nike guy and loyal to it by default but as a grown man started to mature, he wanted what was best for himself and his family and that was switching to Adidas and working with Petersburg Head Coach Ty White leaving Boo Williams after being the head coach of the 16u boys team for the previous three seasons.  Welsh stated that “he maxed out there with his opportunity and felt like this move would help him grow more in the business”.  If business is the new project, then what would you expect to happen once Stefan Welsh digs into this new project and gets the max out of this opportunity?  So when we reflect on the journey that has put Stefan Welsh in this position one would say the ability to constantly challenge yourself and have passion with everything you do to ensure your efforts are not to be questioned.

We will all be witnesses to this next journey and I am sure that Welsh will be on top of his game ready to provide the kids, community, and those involved with opportunities for success.  This has been proven on and off the court while he continues to grow and reflect on things that will leave an impact on a community and a program.  You just know that not too many people obtain 4 state titles under the age of 40 and look like they have so much more to offer.  We are watching greatness in a selfless form so that these kids come out of the jungle ready for any and everything.
