WASHINGTON D.C. — The Washington Wizards have undergone their best stretch of the season, winning 4 of their best 5, including their last two games against the Milwaukee Bucks and the previous night against the Brooklyn Nets.
Washington (9-24) pulled off a clutch 114-113 victory on the road against the Bucks on December 31st. Young Alex Sarr blocked a Giannis Antetokounmpo layup after he grabbed an offensive rebound after a Kevin Porter Jr. missed shot, looking to push the Bucks’ lead to three points with eight seconds left.
CJ McCollum grabbed the defensive rebound, driving down the court to the right baseline, hitting the eventual game-winning shot on a fading jumper over AJ Green with 1.2 seconds left.
Antetokounmpo had a great look at the game-winning jumper on the ensuing possession from the right baseline, but rimmed the shot out over Sarr.
Sarr had a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double, and guard Bub Carrington had 20 points, hitting six threes off the bench, putting up big-time baskets down the stretch for Washington.
Last night, Washington won one of their most comfortable games against the Nets, defeating them 119-99. D.C. had six double-digit scorers in Justin Champagnie (a season-high 20 points), Sarr (19 points), McCollum (17 points), Marvin Bagley III (12 points), Tre Johnson (12 points), and Bilal Coulibaly (11 points).
The Wiz outrebounded the Nets (61-41), controlling the boards and continuing to dominate the interior,r outscoring them inside the paint (58-52).
Another impressive finding was the defensive effort, holding Brooklyn to 40% from the field and 21% from three, for a Wizards team that has ranked near the bottom in defensive rating.
The young core continues to impress and is catching attention from not only the media but also fans within the DMV.
It’s been exciting watching the Wizards lately. Let’s see if they can keep the momentum going.
