Border Rivals Reunite: No. 25 Virginia Battles Unbeaten West Virginia in Charlotte (9-17-26)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — September 19, 2026 — More than two decades after their last meeting, Virginia and West Virginia are finally ready to renew acquaintances.
No. 25 Virginia and West Virginia will meet Saturday night in the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium, with both programs entering the neutral-site showdown at 2-0.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
The matchup brings together two unbeaten teams that have opened the 2026 season in impressive fashion. Virginia has outscored its first two opponents 93-11, while West Virginia has scored 83 points during its 2-0 start.
But Saturday represents a significant step up in competition for both sides.
Virginia’s Defense Faces Its Biggest Test
Virginia has dominated defensively through two games.
The Cavaliers opened the season by holding NC State to just 168 total yards before overwhelming Norfolk State, 59-3. Virginia held the Spartans to 223 yards and has surrendered only 11 points through its first two contests.
Now comes a much different challenge.
West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez has constructed an offense centered around a powerful rushing attack.
Through two games, the Mountaineers are averaging nearly 300 rushing yards per game and 5.3 yards per carry.
Quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. is a major part of that production. The Oklahoma transfer enters Saturday with 199 rushing yards and three touchdowns, including a 71-yard touchdown run against UT Martin.
Running back Cam Cook isn’t far behind, producing 194 rushing yards and three touchdownsthrough two games.
That sets up one of Saturday night’s defining matchups: West Virginia’s ground attack against a Virginia defense surrendering only 65.5 rushing yards per game.
Pribula Gives Virginia a Dual-Threat Weapon
West Virginia won’t be the only team with a quarterback capable of creating problems with his legs.
Virginia quarterback Beau Pribula has made an efficient start to his first season with the Cavaliers.
The Missouri transfer has completed 21 of 25 passes for 317 yards and five touchdowns, while throwing just one interception. He’s also rushed for 102 yards.
Pribula is one of three Cavaliers already over 100 rushing yards, joining Xay Davis (120) and Noah Vaughn (102).
That balance could be critical against a West Virginia defense that has been particularly effective at keeping opponents off the scoreboard early.
The Mountaineers haven’t allowed a point in the first half through their opening two games.
Something will have to give Saturday night.
Brandyn Hillman Emerging as a Difference-Maker
Virginia’s secondary could play a major role if the Cavaliers can force West Virginia away from its preferred ground attack.
Safety Brandyn Hillman has already recorded three interceptions this season, including two against Norfolk State.
Virginia as a team enters the matchup with four interceptions and has continued a takeaway trend that began last season.
West Virginia, meanwhile, has yet to throw an interception through two games.
Hawkins has attempted only 21 passes, completing 76.2 percent of them for 287 yards and three touchdowns.
If Virginia can slow down the Mountaineers on the ground and create obvious passing situations, the battle between Hawkins and the Cavaliers’ secondary becomes one of the game’s biggest storylines.
West Virginia Looking to Prove Its Start Is For Real
The Mountaineers opened their season with a 31-24 victory over Coastal Carolina before dominating UT Martin 52-7.
The 2-0 start is West Virginia’s first since 2018.
Saturday will provide a much clearer indication of where Rodriguez’s program stands in the second season of his return to Morgantown.
West Virginia has undergone another major roster transformation, bringing in more than 80 new players from the transfer portal, junior colleges and high schools.
Despite all that turnover, the Mountaineers have quickly established an identity.
Run the football.
Control the line of scrimmage.
And force opponents to stop it.
Virginia may have the personnel to provide their toughest resistance yet.
Virginia Looking for Its First 3-0 Start Since 2019
Virginia has plenty at stake as well.
The Cavaliers are seeking their first 3-0 start since 2019 after opening the year with convincing victories over NC State and Norfolk State.
Head coach Tony Elliott is coming off a historic 2025 campaign in which Virginia finished alone atop the ACC regular-season standings before falling to Duke in overtime in the ACC Championship Game.
The Cavaliers have carried that momentum into 2026.
Saturday represents their first major opportunity to demonstrate that last season’s success can carry into another run among the ACC’s top teams.
A Rivalry Returns After 24 Years
The history surrounding this matchup adds another layer.
Virginia and West Virginia have met 23 times, with the Cavaliers holding a 12-10-1 advantage in the all-time series.
Their last meeting came in the 2002 Continental Tire Bowl, also played in Charlotte. Virginia won that matchup 48-22.
The schools haven’t played during the regular season since 1985.
More than four decades later, the regular-season rivalry finally returns.
And fittingly, it does so back in Charlotte.
Keys to the Game
Virginia must contain West Virginia’s rushing attack. Hawkins and Cook have combined for nearly 400 rushing yards already. Keeping them from producing explosive runs could force the Mountaineers into a style of game they haven’t needed to play yet.
West Virginia must pressure Pribula. Virginia’s quarterback has been extremely efficient when comfortable. Disrupting his timing and preventing him from extending plays with his legs will be critical.
Turnovers could decide it. Virginia has consistently created takeaways, while West Virginia has protected the football through the air. Winning that battle could dramatically change the momentum of a game featuring two teams that want to control possession.
Watch the opening quarter. Both programs have been excellent early. West Virginia hasn’t surrendered a first-half point, while Virginia has allowed just 11 points all season.

Virginia-West Virginia may have been dormant for more than two decades, but Saturday night’s matchup arrives with plenty at stake.
Both teams are undefeated.
Both have established strong identities during the opening weeks.
And both now get an opportunity to find out how their early-season success holds up against stronger competition.
For Virginia, the challenge is stopping one of the nation’s more productive early-season rushing attacks.
For West Virginia, it’s finding a way to move the football against a Cavaliers defense that has allowed very little through two games.
After 24 years apart, the Cavaliers and Mountaineers will finally share the field again.
This time, an unbeaten record will be leaving Charlotte with its first blemish.
