ODU 31, Norfolk State 10: Monarchs Take Control in 757 Showdown (9-5-26)

NORFOLK, Va. — Old Dominion came out on top in Saturday night’s highly anticipated 757 matchup, defeating Norfolk State 31-10 at Kornblau Field. The Monarchs controlled the game with a balanced offense and a defense that consistently made plays when Norfolk State threatened.
For ODU, Quinn Henicle was the difference-maker in his first regular-season start. The sophomore accounted for four touchdowns, throwing for 137 yards and two scores while adding 68 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. TJ Johnson also stood out with two touchdown receptions.
The Monarchs’ defense deserves just as much credit. ODU held NSU to 220 total yards, while recording three sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and three takeaways. DeAndre Lynch led the way with 10 tackles, while Javen Gibson added 1.5 sacks.
Norfolk State had its moments. Jalyn Daniels was one of the game’s bright spots, rushing for 84 yards on 11 carries, while Paul Billups II caught seven passes for 49 yards. Defensively, Brenden Thompson finished with 11 tackles and Josiah Davis came up with an interception and a sack.
The biggest issue for the Spartans was execution. NSU turned the ball over three times, with two turnovers leading directly to ODU touchdowns. The Spartans also struggled to finish drives, going 2-for-3 in the red zone compared to ODU’s perfect 5-for-5.
Looking Ahead
For ODU, this was a strong opening statement. The Monarchs showed they can run the football, create explosive plays, and pressure opposing quarterbacks. But the real test comes next week when they travel to face Virginia Tech.
For Norfolk State, the loss exposed areas that need attention, particularly protecting the quarterback, limiting turnovers, and getting off the field on third down. Still, the Spartans are 1-1 and showed enough on both sides of the ball to believe this team can bounce back. Their next opportunity comes Friday at Virginia.
Final takeaway: ODU looked like the more complete team Saturday night, but Norfolk State has plenty to build on. For both programs, the next two weeks will tell us much more about what these teams can become.
