UVA started their season opener at home against an in-state rival, William & Mary. This was yet again another packed house for the Cavaliers, and the fans helped in the routing of the Tribe, as UVA went on to 43-0 victory. The Cavaliers dominated on both sides of the ball, the Tribes didn’t have any answers to anything in this Week 1 Matchup. UVA doubled the number of first downs William & Mary had, 22-11. It doesn’t end there! The Cavaliers TRIPLED the number of yards gained in this game. UVA looked like a Pro Team playing against William & Mary. When you’re on a good team, you clean up a lot of mistakes and you do everything you can to not hurt yourself. The Cavaliers committed 2 penalties in this game, only costing them 22 yards. That was a huge reason for victory.
Anytime your defense doesn’t give up a single point, not even an FG, recognition is deserved, and rightfully so! UVA’s defense forced a fumble as their hard-hitting tackles and crafty hands played a part. But their defense pretty much had the Tribe in check. William & Mary couldn’t get ANYTHING going offensively as they held the running and passing game in line. The Tribe had less than 100 passing yards in this game. Huge kudos to that defense and coaching staff for the Cavaliers.
But a huge shoutout goes to UVA QB Brennan Armstrong. He just maybe a future NFL QB because he simply gets it done and understands the moment! He led the team in passing and rushing yards last season. And in this matchup, once again he got it done with his arm and legs as he passed for over 300 yards, threw 2 TD’s and rushed for 2 in the process. UVA got their season started on the right foot here at home and they will look to continue this run in this early season as they host Illinois next week.
