Coach Tony Elliott and the Virginia Cavaliers hit the road for a crucial matchup in Chapel Hill against Coach Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Cavaliers are aiming to remain unbeaten in ACC play, sitting just one game behind the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, who currently hold the top spot in the conference standings. A win on Saturday would keep Virginia firmly in the race for the ACC crown and continue their impressive conference run.
It was a tight defensive battle in Chapel Hill as the Virginia Cavaliers and North Carolina Tar Heels went back and forth all afternoon. Both teams traded field goals early, keeping the game deadlocked until Cavaliers quarterback Chandler Morris connected with wide receiver Terrell Harris on a 30-yard touchdown pass to give Virginia a 10–3 lead. The Tar Heels quickly answered, as quarterback Gio Lopez capped off a short drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak to even the score at 10–10. Late in the second quarter, North Carolina had a chance to take the lead before halftime, but their 50-yard field goal attempt sailed wide, keeping the game tied heading into the break

After halftime, both teams struggled to find the end zone as the defensive battle intensified. The Cavaliers and Tar Heels traded punts throughout the second half, combining for eight punts after the break and 14 total in the game. Neither offense could sustain momentum, and both teams threw costly interceptions that kept the score locked, ultimately sending the game into overtime—Virginia’s third overtime contest of the season, tying a program record set by the 2012 Virginia Tech Hokies. Virginia won the overtime coin toss and elected to receive. Quarterback Chandler Morris led the Cavaliers on a composed opening drive, capping it off with a one-yard rushing touchdown by J’Mari Taylor to give Virginia a 17–10 lead. The Tar Heels responded quickly, as quarterback Gio Lopez found running back Davion Gause on a nine-yard swing pass for a touchdown. Then came a bold move from Coach Bill Belichick, who decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win instead of kicking the extra point to force a second overtime.
On the decisive play, the Virginia defense stood tall, stopping the Tar Heels just short of the goal line to secure a dramatic 17–16 overtime victory.
In the postgame press conference, Coach Bill Belichick was asked why he chose to go for the two-point conversion instead of kicking the extra point to force a second overtime. Belichick gave a brief, straightforward answer: “Just trying to win the game.” On the other side, Coach Tony Elliott admitted he was surprised by Belichick’s decision, especially given how early it was in the overtime period. “I would’ve kicked it — give the guys another opportunity in the second overtime, then you’d have to go for two,” Elliott said. “But hey, he’s won a lot of football games. He’s the best in the business for a reason, so obviously he felt good about the call.”
The Virginia Cavaliers remain unbeaten in the ACC, securing their fourth conference win to move to 4–0 in league play and 7–1 overall, sitting just behind the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Following SMU’s upset of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, Virginia and Georgia Tech are now the only two unbeaten teams in the ACC. The Cavaliers will travel to the West Coast next Saturday to take on the California Golden Bears. As the team continues to improve and find ways to win, Coach Tony Elliott emphasized the resilience of his program, stating, “We will play whatever, however long it takes. That’s the better part of our program — to find a way to win the game.”Virginia’s last four games have all been nail-biters, with victories coming by three points or fewer, highlighting the team’s composure in high-pressure moments.
