Duke Rallies From 10-Point Deficit to Shock Illinois, 31-27 (9-12-26)

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — September 12, 2026 — Duke found itself in serious trouble Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils trailed Illinois by 10 points late in the first half, but instead of folding on the road, Duke flipped the momentum and delivered a statement victory.

The comeback was particularly impressive considering Illinois appeared to be in control for much of the opening half.
Illinois Explodes Early
Illinois’ offense came out firing.
Quarterback Katin Houser repeatedly found wide receiver Collin Dixon, who became the centerpiece of the Illini attack. Dixon hauled in three touchdown passes, helping Illinois build a 24-14 advantage before halftime.
Duke, however, refused to let the game get away.
Quarterback Walker Eget kept the Blue Devils within striking distance, connecting with Jonah Burton for a touchdown and later finding Nate Sheppard to cut into Illinois’ lead.
Duke entered halftime trailing just 24-21, setting the stage for a completely different second half.
Sheppard Takes Over
The second half belonged to Duke’s ground game — and especially Sheppard.
The running back finished with 147 rushing yards and a touchdown on 24 carries, while also contributing five receptions for 41 yards and two receiving touchdowns. His versatility gave Illinois’ defense problems throughout the

Duke eventually took control in the second half and entered the closing minutes protecting a narrow lead.
Defense Makes the Difference
While Duke’s offense received much of the attention, the Blue Devils’ defense came through with the biggest stop of the afternoon.

Illinois had opportunities late, but Duke’s defense continued to make enough plays to protect the lead.
Illinois Can’t Finish the Job
For Illinois, the loss was a painful one.

Houser and Dixon were outstanding early, but Illinois couldn’t maintain that production after halftime.
The Illini also struggled defensively, particularly with tackling, as Duke repeatedly found ways to extend drives and create explosive plays.
Despite the defeat, Illinois still showed plenty of offensive potential. Dixon’s three-touchdown performance demonstrated the type of playmaking ability the Illini can lean on moving forward.
A Statement Win for Duke
For Duke head coach Manny Diaz, this was more than simply a second consecutive victory.
The Blue Devils had an opportunity to prove they could compete on the road against a Big Ten opponent, and they delivered.
Duke overcame adversity, executed in the second half and found multiple ways to win — through the passing game, the ground attack, defense and special teams.
The victory also gave Duke some revenge after Illinois defeated the Blue Devils 45-19 in Durham last season. (SI)
What’s Next
Duke returns home looking to continue its undefeated start, while Illinois will attempt to regroup after letting a double-digit lead slip away.
For the Blue Devils, however, the message is clear.
They can win on the road.
They can overcome adversity.
And after Saturday’s comeback in Champaign, Duke has announced itself as a team worth watching in the ACC.
