Mariners Outlast Orioles in 11 Innings (June 27, 2018)

By:Darrell Owens

The Baltimore Orioles (23-55) came into Game 3 of their home series vs. the Seattle Mariners (49-31) looking to find a way to bounce back from loses in the first two games of the series. Felix Hernandez help lead the Mariners to a victory in Game 1 (June 25) in the series pitching 6 innings with four strikeouts. Dee Gordon went 2-5 at the plate and knocked in two runs to help take Game 1 for Seattle 5-3. Game 2 was the James Paxton show, “The Big Maple” put in 7 innings of work and 10 strikeouts for Seattle. Mariners stars Jean Segura (who went 3-4 at the plate) and Kyle Seager who’s 3 RBI help the Mariners to a 3-2 victory on June 26. Orioles Mark Trumbo has been a bright spot for the O’s coming into this game with 10 game-hitting streak and is hope to provide more light for the Orioles. Plus with all the Manny Machado trade talk, the Orioles are looking for a change of momentum and get things on the right track for the future. With that being said here is my recap from Game 3 Of the series.

The top of the 1st inning saw the Mariners in and out after 4 batters. Bottom of the first, Orioles started the contest off on the right foot. With a runner on 1st Base, Danny Valencia would hit a home run to left/center field give the Orioles the early 2-0 lead. In the top of the 2nd, the Mariners would strike right back with a solo home run to centerfield from 1st baseman Ryon Healy (His 15 HR this season) putting the M’s one run closer 2-1.To the top of the 3rd, with runners on the corners, Mariners LF Denard Span, who recently was traded from Tampa Bay to Seattle, hit a single to centerfield driving in Jean Segura from 3rd Base tying the ballgame at 2. Baltimore fired right back in the bottom half of the 3rd with hits from CF Adam Jones, SS Manny Machado and the lead changing hit from DH Mark Trumbo (who extended his hitting streak to 11 games). Jones and Machado both score on the hit, Machado scored on a throwing error from Denard Span making it a 4-2 game after 3 innings.

Jumping to the Top Of The 5th, Seattle would reclaim the lead 5-4 after having the bases loaded scoring 3 total runs in the inning. Catcher Mike Zunino singled into centerfield scoring two of the runs getting a little revenge vs Orioles pitcher Alex Cobb, who hit Zunino in the head in the 2nd inning. After two innings of scoreless baseball, the Orioles took possession of the lead once again in the bottom of the 8th, when the struggling 1B Chris Davis hit a 3-run home run making this 7-5 ballgame and the game look to be over, but Kyle Seager & Seattle Mariners had other plans. In the top of the 9th, Seager smacked a two-run home run to right field to tie the game and would eventually send this game into extra innings. In extras, Seattle was able to pull the victory off 8-7 on timely hitting by Jean Segura (2 for 5 for the game) and Kyle Seager (3 for 6 and 2 RBI). A Denard Span Sacrifice fly would score Segura from 3rd Base scoring the winning run.

Chasen Bradford (5-0 with 2.81era) would get the win for the Mariners in relief. Mychal Givens (0-5 4.01 era) would get charge with the lost for the Orioles and Edwin Diaz would get save number 30 for the Mariners this season. Diaz is current the league leader in saves by seven saves. The Mariners (50-31) become the 4th team in MLB to reach 50 wins this season & will have an opportunity to sweep the series on Thursday, June 28 at 3pm. The question is will the Orioles (23-56) will be ready to do what it takes to stop Seattle from getting the sweep? We will find out soon in series that has been highly competitive.
