Winning is Not Always the Story? Are All The Lovable Losers Gone?

By:Robb Johnson

What in the hell is going on? In the last three years or so we have seen things that really cannot be explained. We have had the Cubs, Cavaliers, Eagles, Capitals all winning championships. This is not normal, I say this because in sports we always need that little guy to root for. The question is who do we root for to be the next team to break through? The Cleveland Browns are a disaster, the Minnesota Timberwolves aren’t winning an NBA title anytime soon, and maybe we can say the New York Knicks?

This is the point back in 2004 when the Boston Red Sox won the World Series over the St. Louis Cardinals the fans were going crazy it was the story of the century. They have two more titles since and it’s been like okay, does anyone really even care?

Sometimes in sports certain teams not winning is better for the sport, like the Dallas Cowboys for example. Dallas not winning a title since 1995 makes them more polarizing and gives people like Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless more to talk about and bring in ratings.

Now getting back to Boston, I remember a time when the rivalry was so hot between them and the New York Yankees. The goal was for Boston to keep suffering from the curse of the Gambino, and it was interesting. When Boston won all that went away, I’m glad to see the rivalry is getting back to that testy place now that it once was.

I will conclude by saying great job to all the long suffering teams like the newly crowned Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles and Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals.

Here is the problem what are you really cheering for now, what happens if you turn into the 2004 Pistons where you win have success for a few years and then fall back in the state of mediocracy? Will this be okay because you got that one championship that you have been craving for a long time, will the local media and fans get fat and happy knowing we won the chip and were good?

Sports is about winning and we all love to win, but let’s not forget and let’s be all the way real. The story of sports and the entertainment part can be just as important off the field, as what goes on between the lines.
